While driving around town near our corporate headquarters, we realized something. Some street signs are ridiculously hard to read. Granted, our eyes are not the best, but putting illegible street signs up for cataract prone drivers seems like a cruel joke.
Thankfully, it looks like change is on the way. We came across ClearviewHwy, the site dedicated to the future font of highway signs. Exciting, yes? Well, us blind drivers are looking forward to some change.
This Clearview Highway font has been constructed based on several different and intensive studies. Their site offers plenty of examples to set thier new fonts apart from the standard highway signs currently in use. One huge difference is the use of uppercase and lowercase lettering. Their studies showed that there was a 14% increase in recognizing signs that had different lettering. Makes sense to us. Why have all large block letters when making out shapes of lowercase lettering can be done quicker?
Another improvement with the Clearview signs are the distances they are recognized at. Clearview highway signs improve the distance of recognition by 16%. You might think that is not a lot, but quoting Clearview:
"For drivers traveling at 45 M.P.H., that legibility enhancement could easily translate into 80 extra feet of reading distance, or a substantial 1.2 seconds of additional reading time."
That is all we are asking for, 1.2 seconds of extra time to know which street will lead us to the beach. You can't always head due west because sometimes obstacles are in the way.
The ClearviewHwy site offers detailed examples in every which way why drivers will benefit from their improved highway signs. From over glow, to the letter spacing, everything anyone would want to know about highway signs is on this site. We can't wait to "borrow" a sign to place it up in our office. As for the states, each individual state has to decide to make the big switch. However, they are not required by any law, the government laws or qball.org's law. We all have to wait and see if states decide to make the change to safer driving. Until then, we'll squint our way around town.

I hear that having normal eyesight also helps alleviate all aforementioned problems. Or, here's an idea, wearing the glasses the doctor prescribed for your horrible eyesight. Just a thought. :)
